Southern Giant Burrowing Frog
The Southern Giant Burrowing Frog is one of Victoria’s most poorly understood frogs.
However, its habitat has been severely impacted by logging, large bushfires, and extreme weather events, such as prolonged drought. It is likely that the widespread amphibian disease chytridiomycosis is affecting populations.
The plan for fighting extinction
Zoos Victoria is carrying out important surveys, monitoring and field research to discover more about the Southern Giant Burrowing Frog, its forest habitat, and the threats it faces. We are also establishing a conservation breeding program for the species especially following the impacts of the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires.
